Verbal Judo

Verbal Judo Logo

“Whether at home or in the office boardroom, Verbal Judo can show you how to be better prepared in every verbal encounter.  (It) will teach you how to listen and speak more effectively; how to engage people through empathy; how to avoid the most common conversational disasters; and how to have a proven, easily remembered strategy that will allow you successfully to communicate your point of view and take the upper hand in most disputes”.

Dr. Thompson, in his book: ‘Verbal Judo, The Gentle Art of Persuasion’

Do you have to deal with difficult or aggressive people?  Do your emotions overcome you at times when dealing with frustrating situations?  Would you like to communicate better with people around you such as your colleagues, your clients, your spouse, your children or even your friends?

If you have responded positively to all these questions, Verbal Judo – or tactical communication - is for you!  Tactical communication make use of various techniques (called <kata>) to enable you to deal and interact better with someone in a difficult or even crisis situation.  The ultimate goal of tactical communication is to generate voluntary compliance from your interlocutor.  Verbal Judo can be used at work and at home.

George J. Thompson, Ph. D., is from the United States and he is the founder of the Verbal Judo Institute.  Dr. Thompson has taught English at the high school and university levels, worked as a police officer, holds a Ph. D. from the University of Connecticut and completed postdoctoral work at Princeton University in rhetoric and persuasion.  He has trained more than 175 000 American police officers to date and has taught this course to numerous professionals such as medical personnel and educators.

Protection Services now has two Verbal Judo instructors among its ranks.  They are available to teach this course to the members of your department.  The course is free and of a duration of 8 hours (full day course). Verbal Judo is also offered through the Human Resources Training and Development Centre.  Click here to find out when the course is offered.
